Technical Support
DoroTree offers Technical support to all customers. Technical support cannot teach you genealogical techniques or even the special characteristics of Jewish genealogy, however it can help you solve technical problems.
Certain genealogical advice is available in the Help files supplied with the program. We also recommend that you see JewishGen's special section for Frequently Asked Questions, a service offered free by JewishGen, an extraordinary web site with a very rich assortment of services for the Jewish genealogist.
For technical support via email, write to dt-support@dorotree.com. In all requests for help, add your "Technical Support User no. [18 digits]" in the heading, as it appears on the Help menu, in the "About DoroTree
" dialog box.

Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Why does DoroTree ask me for a registration number when it starts?
Answer: During setup you may have typed in the 18-digit number incorrectly. Enter the correct number, and DoroTree will stop asking you for it.
Question: Why cant I type on the Main screen?
Answer: The Main screen is designed so that you dont accidentally change data. In order to edit data use the Update icon (2nd from the left) to open an Edit dialog box.
Question: Where is my family tree stored?
Answer: DoroTree stores your family tree in a file with a .dte extension. The name of the file is the name that appears on the top left-hand corner of your screen, with a .dte suffix. (E.g. My Family.dte). While DoroTree is open, your updates are temporarily stored in the Working Files directory under the DoroTree directory. Never try to manipulate the files in the Working Files directory, as this will corrupt your database.
Question: What is the Backup of My Family.dte file?
Answer: Every time DoroTree closes, a backup copy of your family tree is created just to be on the safe side. Nevertheless you should make your own backup copy once in a while. Use the File | Save As menu item for this.
Question: How do I add my own data to a report?
Answer: Using your mouse, "draw" a square by holding down the left button and moving diagonally. After releasing the mouse button, you can leftclick on this square to highlight it, and then press Enter to invoke the Edit node dialog box to decide on the content and format of the box. (For more details, see Adding a text box to a tree topic in the online Help file.)
Question: Can I save my reports?
Answer: Yes! Use the File | "Save as" menu item. Reports can be reloaded with the File | Load from file menu item. Loaded files do not return you to the Main screen if you double-click on a person.
Question: Why dont I see all the generations on my tree?
Answer: By default, DoroTree will show 6 generations. Use the Settings | Number of generations menu item to change this default. Each report remembers the number you choose for it.
Question: How do I find a person?
Answer: Use the Index menu item. You can then search by name, date, DT# or similar sounding names (Soundex).
Question: What is the DT#?
Answer: The DT# is the DoroTree identification number. Every person is allocated a unique serial number. Some people find it easier to differentiate between persons this way especially when several relatives have the same or similar names.
Question: Why dont I see anything when I open the ancestor report?
Answer: The ancestor tree does not usually have anything in the top left-hand corner. Use the zoom bar to shrink the picture, or the vertical scroll bar to move it lower.
Question: Whats the easiest way to transfer family trees between different programs?
Answer: Use the GEDCOM facilities. Under the File | GEDCOM menu item you have several utilities to import and export family trees.
Question: I performed a GEDCOM import to DoroTree and the Hebrew looks like gibberish what can I do?
Answer: Use the GEDCOM Special Import menu item, which should correctly copy your Hebrew fields to DoroTrees Hebrew fields.
Question: How do I remove people from my database?
Answer: Use the Edit | Person Record | Remove Person from Family Tree menu item.
Question: What does DoroTree mean?
Answer: Dorot means generations in Hebrew, Tree is your heritage. DoroTree stands for The Jewish Genealogy Software.
Question: I did something and now I have a big DoroTree logo blocking my screen how do I continue?
Answer: While saving your file, DoroTree displays this screen. If your hard drive stops spinning and this screen does not disappear, press Alt-F4 to close it.
Question: I tried to set up DoroTree but it asks for a serial number and I cannot find one on the inside of the box or anywhere. What do I do?
Answer: A label with your user registration number is always included in the box. You can typically find it in one of the following places:
- On the user registration card.
- On the inside cover of the mail-order box.
- On the back of the envelope or "jewel box" containing the CD-ROM.
It is a white label 7 cm (2 3/4 inch) wide that has no text except the user reg. no., but that carries an imprint of DoroTree's colour logo.
Comment: User Registration No., User No. and Serial No. all stand for the same.
Question: Does DoroTree support Mac installations?
Answer:
DoroTree does not support Mac installations, but we have to date a number of Mac users around the world who use DoroTree with Virtual PC.
Here is what one Mac user wrote to us:
| "It worked great. Just open Virtual PC on the Mac. Put the DoroTree Installation CD (demo version) in to the CD drive and the install shield starts just like a PC. Follow the directions and it loads...
|
| DoroTree loaded. I 'rebooted' as requested. It only restarts Virtual PC. I entered names of my friend who has the Mac. His Hebrew name showed up. Dates worked fine. When I switched right hand language to English, it looked fine. I added some more family members and switched back to Hebrew, the dates switched
correctly.
It looks and acted just like a PC, only better because it was on a Mac.

Congratulation. You know have a "Mac" version of DoroTree!!!

In case you are still not sure you want to buy, you can download a demo version limited to a 36 persons database from the demo page . The information you enter will not be lost if you later decide to upgrade to the full version and you don't even have to download the program once again!
